RACHAEL PRICE of Lake Street Dive and VILRAY met at the New England Conservatory of Music in the Fall of 2003 and became friends. Their duo grew from a shared reverence for the pop music of the 1930s and 40s and its wide range of emotions. With simple arrangements and only a guitar for accompaniment, they perform original works and revive forgotten gems of the jazz big bands and western swing ensembles. Their sound recalls both the warmth of radio's golden age and the intimacy of parlor concerts in a time before recordings.
Vilray (vill-ree) is a working musician raised in Brooklyn who sings, whistles, and plays guitar in NYC and around the world. He performs solo and in collaboration including as part of a duo, Rachael & Vilray, with the legendary singer Rachael Price, frontwoman of Lake Street Dive, .
His work is most influenced by the varieties of swing music played in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, both jazz and country. He admires the warmth, rhythm and emotional range of this period's recordings. Vilray studied instrumental music at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in Manhattan and jazz composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
In April 2016, a passing commuter filmed him and bassist Damon Hankoff performing in a Brooklyn subway station and today the video has been seen by over half a million people all over the world!
With the release of his single 'She Calls Me MacLeish / Do Friends Fall in Love?', Vilray has begun to release his original Tin Pan Alley style songs. This music was recorded live and lathe-cut to vinyl in real time--lending a beautiful warmth and crackle to the sound.
