Folk Song Repertoire

In this series, the emphasis is on building your repertoire of songs, so Shay will teach up to five songs per class from the different Irish, Scottish, English and other traditions. These range from the humble “Come-all-ye” to the Child Ballad to the folk anthem. His teaching style is through learning by repetition, so no background knowledge of music theory is necessary. Starting from "If you can hum it, you can sing it", Shay will work through songs in an easy to learn call-and-response fashion. This class is not for listeners; you will be singing all through this class in a very supportive group setting, so don’t be scared.

The songs are either recorded and posted on The Freight website along with lyrics on the Tuesday/Wednesday after the class, or they will be made available to class members via Dropbox.

If you like, you can bring your own device to record everything, and Shay will provide hard copy lyrics during class. And you don't need to attend every class. Songs from the previous week are reviewed at every class.

Although not the prime focus of the class, Shay is prepared to give individual performance pointers to those who feel they might need it, and also will let students know venues and opportunities to sing in front of an audience.

Shay Black

Irish-born Shay Black has lived in the east bay for over 20 years, and his most regular gig these days is the weekly Sunday "Starry Irish Music Session" at The Starry Plough Pub in Berkeley. Shay draws on his extensive personal song collection, and has taught repertoire building at many music camps and festivals, and continues to be an avid and enthusiastic songcatcher.

With a background steeped in traditional and folk music, he performs and records with brothers Michael and Martin, and also at times with sisters Frances and Mary Black. In Europe, he has also toured and recorded with the late great Stan Hugill and the fabled sea shanty group Stormalong John and Irish band Garva. He has just released a new CD with The Dogwatch Nautical Band.
