R.E.I.G.N. ft Kirby Lane & Davonne D'Neil "Soul Night"

Reign

It’s been said that a family that prays together, stays together. It could also be said that a family that sings together, stays together. Family is at the heart of the contemporary Gospel group, R.E.I.G.N. Consisting of a diverse connection of family relationships – father to son, cousin to cousin and niece to uncle, the gifted singing aggregation has one mission in mind: to bring others into the family of God while exalting the name of Jesus. Known for their impeccable harmonies, dynamic delivery and riveting performances and also recognized for opening up for artists such as Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC’s, The Williams Brothers, Jason Nelson and Earnest Pugh, R.E.I.G.N., formerly known as Remnant, has been catching the attention of the Gospel music fans. Prepping their sophomore release, R.E.I.G.N. is set to inspire the nation with melodies from Heaven.

Founded in 1997, the ensemble launched from their home base in Maryland, specifically in the Broadneck Peninsula area, from Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church. All of them oozing with talent and active in their church’s music ministry, the family members felt their calling extended outside the walls of their church; it was at that moment that they decided to form Remnant. They quickly gained a following locally and began performing at churches and community events. Since they started, they’ve performed at various churches, banquets and festivals throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Known for their authentic worship, vocal prowess and superior musicianship, they built a reputation as truly gifted singers and musicians.

Ultimately, the ensemble, led by David Stansbury, stepped into the studio to record their first project. God’s Promise, a six-song EP, included tracks like "Psalm 95," "He's Worthy," "I Recommend Jesus," and the CD’s title tune. Also featured were two additional tracks, "So Many Reasons" and a unique rendition of "The Lord's Prayer". The moving songs garnered coveted airplay on Baltimore and Annapolis area Gospel radio stations. R.E.I.G.N.’s principal songwriter, Alvin Stansbury, father of David and the elder statesman of the ensemble, is responsible for the well-crafted and relatable songs recorded by the group. The combination of great songwriting and soulful execution was a formula for success. The musical offering debuted strong and further solidified the group’s bright future as artists and music ministers.

Although most of their music is more modern in its approach, they are well-versed sonically and use sounds from traditional Gospel, soul and R&B to create a vibe all their own. “I would say that we are a mixture of musical styles,” says Jasmine Hall, the group’s only female member. In speaking about the elder Stansbury, Hall says, “He brings all that he gleaned from groups like the Edwin Hawkins Singers, Take 6 and Earth, Wind and Fire and merges it with today’s sounds. The combination gives us our own unique sound.” That “unique sound”, showcased on God’s Promise, set the group apart and Gospel music lovers near and far have been taking note.

In 2019, the group felt a shift in the direction of the ensemble; the desire for a new name followed. Just one day after brainstorming about the new moniker for the group, the acronym R.E.I.G.N. dropped in the spirit of Donald “DJ” Hunt Jr., a member of the group. R.E.I.G.N. stands for Revolutionary Evangelists Igniting God’s Nation and it’s the new mission of these gifted believers and talented singers and musicians. R.E.I.G.N. consists of members David Stansbury (lead vocals), Alvin Stansbury (keyboard), Jasmine Hall (alternate lead vocals), Janathan “Nate” Crutchfield (lead vocals), Donald “DJ” Hunt Jr. (vocals), William Ray (alternate lead vocals), Sean Hunt (keyboard), Wayne Curtis (bass), D'angelo Scruggs-Lee (drums) and Rashon Savage (drums, keyboard). Each member was raised in the church and all had a parent that sang in a group.

With a new name comes a new project and the group is excited about the upcoming release. R.E.I.G.N. is readying a brand new project for 2019, one that is sure to give the saints music to dance to and lift hands to. Fans who have been waiting with bated breath for new music from the group will find their wait worth it with the tracks, “Leaning” and “It Was You”. R.E.I.G.N.’s first two singles from the sophomore CD will be available in the spring, with the full release dropping later in the year.

The ensemble is excited about the new music, but each member of R.E.I.G.N. sees music as just a vehicle to get a very important message across to people. Alvin Stansbury says, “We don’t write or record a song just to say we completed a song. It’s important that God be the writer; He needs to be the composer. We let Him send the message.” It’s this universal message of faith that attracts all ages and ethnicities to R.E.I.G.N.’s ministry.

All of the members enjoy the ministry and the family fellowship. “One of the reasons I love being part of the group is because we really love the Lord,” says William Ray. “Another thing I love is that we are all family. When we come together, there’s nothing but love here. And most of all, all of us do our best to live the life we sing about”. David Stansbury sums it up by saying, “This group has a purpose. We are trying to change people’s lives with our music. I love what we’re doing and I love singing with my family.
