Shane Smith & the Saints
From opening a sold out show at the oldest dance hall in Texas, to singing on the top of a snow-covered mountain in Colorado, Shane Smith and The Saints have managed to cover serious ground in the Texas music front without an album to their name. After two years of hard work, the wait is finally over with the highly-anticipated release of the debut album Coast.
After playing music throughout his adolescence, Smith decided to take the leap in 2010 and devote his life to music. Though never easy, Smith looks at the opportunity with nothing but humility and wide-eyed enthusiasm. "When I listen to songs from artists like Guy Clark, Hayes Carll and Adam Carroll, I'm reminded of how powerful music can be and the ways it can move people. I look at music as a never ending opportunity to truly impact a listener." It is this unyielding passion and love of the open road that have provided Smith and The Saints with a deep seeded relentlessness to perform on as many stages as possible. "Music's ability get through a day of work, relieve a tough time or even causing a person to dance for the first time in years, I think that is my favorite part about doing this… seeing a reaction from the song. I hope they find that in Coast."
Almost all of the miles traveled have been spent with the passenger seat occupied by fiddle player and long-time friend, Bennett Brown. Accompanying Smith and Brown are Tim Allen on lead guitar, Jordan Rochefort on drums and Brian Wolfe on bass. The past few years of travel and camaraderie have helped the band develop the weathered grit sound of old roots rock and traditional country. Many different audiences have been able to kick up their heels to Smith and are now looking forward to hearing the band on the air.
The album's music reflects relationships made on the road over the past years. Recorded and co-produced by Bob Gentry in the pines of east Texas, the debut album Coast features 13 tracks of powerful multi-part harmonies, in-your-face fiddle riffs and the driving rhythms that make roots music so unique. Coast features guest appearances from Aaron Watson and members of both The Trishas & Turnpike Troubadours.
Tracking the record was no easy task. Spanning a total of two years in and out of studios, all while juggling a 180 shows-per-year schedule; Smith has fought a very long fight to arrive at this debut. That effort along with the relationships made between the members of the band over the years are reflected in the debut single "Coast," carrying their sound to Texas radio airwaves this summer.
JB and the Moonshine Band
JB and the Moonshine Band are a group of four young East Texans whose love for music brought them together in a somewhat unorthodox way. In early 2009, front man JB Patterson gave up a successful advertising career to pursue his dream of being a songwriter. After realizing how difficult it is for a songwriter to break into the music scene, he realized what he had to do—start a band and sing the songs himself!
JB listed an open casting call for musicians in his community. Turnout for the audition was small; only three people showed up, but three was enough. The group had an impromptu jam session and as JB describes it, "It was obvious. Halfway through the first song, I knew they were the Moonshine Band". After a successful first show at local honky-tonk, JB and the boys were willing to do whatever it took to get their songs out there. "Our motto was if anybody offered us a gig, we would play it. We were going to play every show we could whether they offered us a thousand dollars or a hundred… or sometimes nothing at all". With a jerry-rigged PA system and a rented U-Haul van, the boys travelled through East Texas, gaining a local following. The group's big break came while opening for Average Joe's Entertainment artist Colt Ford in March of 2010. The band's country sound and outlaw attitude immediately caught the attention of Colt's team, and in July of 2010, JB and the Moonshine Band signed a record deal with Average Joes Entertainment.
The band's debut album, "Ain't Goin Back to Jail" premiered in September of 2010, with Gabe Guevara on drums, Hayden McMullen on lead guitar, Chris Flores on bass guitar and JB providing lead vocals, banjo, and acoustic guitar. JB also serves as the band's lyricist, writing all of the songs on the record, which is an accomplishment he's particularly proud of: "What I like is that we write our own songs—I sing my own songs, and I think that adds an element of authenticity that country music fans appreciate. We're not super polished, we're not overproduced, we're raw, we're real, and we don't apologize for it".
American country musician, born 23 July 1979 in Harper, Kansas, USA.
Central California's country hip-hop rebels the Moonshine Bandits are making noise with their new album "Whiskey and Women", as the album landed at position No. 54 on BILLBOARD's Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists. The Moonshine Bandits' intoxicating musical mixture of hip-hop and country won over fans of different genres as their new album simultaneously hit Billboard's Rap chart at No. 44, Current Country chart at No. 65, and the Independent albums chart at No. 162. Take 1 shot of Johnny Cash influence, 1 shot of the Beastie Boys influence and a dash of dancing girls, and you've got the unconventional new duo, the Moonshine Bandits.
The Bandits have toured Nationally, recorded or performed with established artists such as Uncle Kracker, David Allan Coe, REHAB, TECHN9NE, Kottonmouth Kings, Everlast, Pepper, N2Deep, Twiztid, Boondox, Haystak, Vanilla Ice, Expendables, E-40 and the list goes on. Moonshine Bandits songs "Sweet Home California" , "Moonshine" featuring Danny Boone from the group REHAB (Sittin' at a Bar song), and "Super Goggles" have all received Radio Airplay on FM Top 40 Stations in various regions. The Moonshine Bandits are definitely the working man's champion and continue to earn their stripes in a tough industry. The Bandits endorse their own brand of Liquor beverage called "Moonshine Bandits Outlaw Moonshine" The 99 proof spirit sold in regional grocery/liquor stores and online at www.outlawshine.com. One of the reasons Tex and Bird became known as the Moonshine Bandits is because of Tex's deep family roots of bootlegging booze during the Prohibition years. Tex's great grandfather used a barber shop as a front while he peddled alcohol illegally in baby carriages to community members, family, friends and politicians. This all took place in Northern California during the years of the Great Depression.
The Bandits have earned a ton of industry credits with music placed in Extreme Sports DVDs, 4x4 DVD's, and close to 1,000 live shows performed.
Moonshine Bandits have performed in Biker Clubhouses where most Police Departments wouldn't even step foot in, Smoke Filled Dive Bars, Biker Bars, Clubs, Harley Davidson Events, Cage Fighting Events, 4x4 Mud Conventions, Beer Festivals, Music Venues, and just about every other type of venue you can imagine. The ultimate honor was receiving a phone call from the United States Military to perform at Fort Irwin, CA. The Moonshine Bandits performed on July 4, 2010 at the Fort Irwin Military Base located in the Mojave Desert for thousands of our U.S. Troops. Their Live performances rival many of today's mega super stars. Their show consists of backup singer Derrty D, Award Winning DJ ChopStiqs, Shiner Girl Dancer Kristin aka Firecracker, their drummer B. Diddy and a lifted 4 x 4 Limo. If the Bandits are in your town, be ready for a Hell Raisin' Good ol' Time!
As the Moonshine Bandits gained momentum and their fan base started spreading outside of California to different states, and to Japan, Canada, Sweden, and troops stationed overseas, SHINER NATION WAS BUILT. Shiner Nation was formed to unite all the Moonshine Bandits fans. The Definition of a Shiner is a Rowdy Individual commonly known as a Moonshine Bandit Fan. Living the Shiner Lifestyle isn't just about the music, it's also about partying it up and raising hell your own way. You only live once. The Bandits Musical foundation was built with a blue collar approach from the ground up. Their success is truely a result of hard work and doing things "their" way.
Born 1979; son of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter.
Cody Canada and the Departed
Cody Canada was 16 years old when he made his way from Yukon to Stillwater, Oklahoma. He had been searching for some inspiration; a place to call home musically. What he found was a creative nirvana of musicians who were generating the music that would stay with him for the rest of his life. "It was like the greatest place on earth, " Cody recalls. "I met Tom Skinner, Scott Evans, Bob Childers, Jimmy LaFave, the Red Dirt Rangers and they were all playing this really, really good music. It was kind of in that same vibe as the Allman Brothers and The Band. But what came out of it was really diverse. There were more country acts like Jason Boland. The All American Rejects were the rock guys. Then you had the whole Red Dirt hippie thing…I didn't even know what Red Dirt was until somebody told me. I got turned on to it all and it's stayed with me ever since."
During the 15 years that Canada was frontman for Cross Canadian Ragweed, he successfully tapped into those influences on each of their nine albums. Four of those nine charted on Billboard's Top 10 Country Albums over the course of the years, thousands of albums were sold and the band played to sell out crowds across the country helping to spread "red dirt" music. But the one thing that Canada wanted to do in honor of his musical heartland never came to fruition…until now.
In the wake of Cross Canadian Ragweed's decision to part ways, Cody resurfaced with an armament of musicians and a mission in mind. With his long time Ragweed band mate, Jeremy Plato (bass) the two made a seamless transition into the world of The Departed, as in 'Cody Canada and The Departed". "We kicked around several ideas for names," Canada said. "We're all from different bands and we wanted something to sound like we came from different places. The Departed was right on the money." Along with Canada and Plato, The Departed rounds out with Seth James on guitar (Seth James Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard), Steve Littleton on B3 organ and keys (Live Oak Decline, Stoney LaRue & the Arsenals, Medicine Show) and Dave Bowen on drums (Stoney LaRue, Bleu Edmondson, Dale Watson).
Because they have traveled in the same circles for years, the band members are all familiar with each other and familiar with each other's style of playing. More than likely they've all played on the same stage at one time or another already. It's this familiarity with each other that made their first project so uncomplicated. Although The Departed is writing and will record original material, the band's first priority was getting into the studio and cutting the Oklahoma tribute album that Cody had been wanting to do for years. The result is This Is Indian Land, The Departed's debut album set for release this spring.
This Is Indian Land is a 15-track deep "buffet of really kick-ass Okie songs," Canada states. He jokingly says "It might sound like originals because not many people have ever heard these songs". But in fact, the album is loaded with well-known selections like Kevin Welch's "Kickin' Back in Amsterdam" and "True Love Never Dies", JJ Cale's "If You're Ever in Oklahoma" and Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Leon Russell's "Home Sweet Oklahoma".
Of course there were a few tracks picked for more personal reasons. Cody notes, "'The Ballad of Rosalie' (Randy Pease) was the first song I ever heard in Stillwater. 'Little Rain Will Do' (Greg Jacobs) is just an awesome historical song I've been wanting to record since the first time I heard it. Randy Crouch's 'Face On Mars' really kind of frightened us. A lot of people wanted us to do it but we didn't know what to do with it. We sat there for a whole day trying to get it arranged and find a groove for it. We made it happen and it's one of my favorites on the album".
This Is Indian Land was recorded at Yellow Dog Studios in Austin, TX. As if the album content and inspiration weren't Oklahoma enough for The Departed, Yellow Dog Studios and owner Dave Percefull got their start in Tulsa. "It really kind of tied it all together," Cody says. "I walked in and saw all the pictures of these Stillwater guys hanging on the wall and thought 'Man, this is exactly where this album needs to be cut".
Cody Canada & The Departed is already making waves on the road. With the recording of the album behind them and a brand new year in front, the band has hit the road like only professionals know how to do. As excited as they are about their gigs, they are taking it all very seriously. "It's funny because with Ragweed we got to a point where we didn't have to practice. We were playing so many shows we could just get up there and do the tunes, right? Well now it's a new band playing new songs so we've got to learn everything, get our game together and practice. It's a whole lot of fun. I can't sleep at night. It keeps me awake, not from worry but from excitement. We're just ready to tear it up."
"People see stuff that is already there and ask why I dream stuff that never was and ask why not". This saying describes the LACS, they saw what was already there, had big dreams to be there, and asked the music industry why not? Their hick hop and southern rock sound is stronger than the moonshine they drink. The LACS which is the famous short abbreviation of the Loud Ass Crackers are from the sandy dirt roads of Baxley, Georgia. A South Georgia town more famous for its sawmills and turpentine stills than for having a successful southern rap group. The LACS consist of hip hop artist Clay "Uncle Snap" Sharpe and lead vocalist / guitarist Brian " Rooster" King. With a blue collar background they have worked shutdowns with the union and framed many a house to earn enough money keep their music dreams alive. The LACS latest album is still in the works but already has created a buzz with its contributions from Average Joe recording artist Colt Ford on the song "Shindig" and allowing the LACS the privilege of performing some of his tour dates. Want to have a good time and hear some hick hop country? Check out Colt Ford and the LACS, where you will see a show you won't never forget. Keep watching for dates in your area. Keep listening and we hope you enjoy our new material.
